Ever wonder what it’s like to get accepted into one dream university? MAN 4 Jakarta student, Ghifran Majid knows. He got into thirteen. And his story? It’s not about being a superhero; it’s about being real, curious, and a little bit brave.
Ghifran Majid’s story isn’t just about getting into a dream university; it’s about getting into thirteen of them, spanning continents and cultures. His approach was strategic, grounded, and refreshingly honest. Here’s how he did it, straight from his own experience:
For Ghifran, choosing universities was about more than just rankings. “I looked for schools that were strong in Computer Science and had good support for international students,” he explains. But it wasn’t solely about academics. “Scholarships were crucial, and I focused on places that valued my IELTS and school grades, since I didn’t take the SAT.” He also prioritized a welcoming campus and a nurturing learning environment. “It was important that the university felt like a place where I could grow, not just academically, but also personally.”
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. “Applying to universities in different countries meant dealing with diverse requirements,” Ghifran recalls. “Essays, recommendation letters, and sworn translations-it was a lot to manage while still juggling school.” He emphasized the challenge of managing his time effectively, especially without SAT scores. “I had to put extra effort into my IELTS, GPA, and personal statement to compensate. It was stressful, but I kept pushing forward.”
What made his application shine? “A balanced approach,” Ghifran believes. “Strong grades and IELTS were important, but I also showcased my personality through school activities, competitions, and leadership roles.” He didn’t just list achievements; he explained their significance. “I talked about my passion for tech and how my experiences shaped me. I wrote honestly, not trying to be perfect, just real.” This genuine approach, he feels, resonated with the universities
Ghifran’s advice to future applicants is simple: “Start with what you have and don’t wait until you feel ‘ready.” He stresses the importance of individuality. “Everyone’s path is different.” He encourages students to balance academics with passions, utilizing free online resources, and seeking help when needed. “And most importantly,” he adds, “believe in yourself.
Ghifran’s strategy was one of focused dedication. “In school, I prioritized subjects relevant to my major, like Math and Informatics.” He chose extracurriculars he genuinely enjoyed, like tech events and robotics, and committed to them fully. Time management was key, especially for IELTS preparation. “I focused on things that felt meaningful, so it never felt like I was just trying to ‘look good.’”
Ghifran Majid’s journey is a testament to the power of thoughtful planning, genuine passion, and unwavering self-belief. His story serves as an inspiration for students worldwide, proving that with the right approach, even the most ambitious dreams can become a reality.
